IPVanish is a popular VPN service with a larger server network and claims to provide the industry’s “best VPN speed.”
Maybe like you, I am never satisfied with these marketing statements on the surface. So I decided to let IPVanish pass the extensive test of the IPVanish review of the 2019 update:
- Does IPVanish provide “top-level” speed across the entire server network?
- Does the IPVanish application guarantee the security of all data through good termination of the switch, IP and DNS leak protection, and secure encryption?
- Does IPVanish provide a stable connection without interruption (good reliability)?
- Is this value worth the price?
All of these questions were answered in the comments below, and all test results are backed by screenshots. First, we will introduce an overview of our findings and then delve into the detailed results.
IPVanish overview (pros and cons)
After several speed tests with IPVanish servers in Europe, the US and Canada, I concluded that IPVanish is one of the fastest VPNs I have tested. The nearby server is always close to my full baseline speed (more than 90 Mbps). Long-distance server testing is equally impressive, with excellent reliability and comprehensive connectivity stability.
Security and privacy testing is also perfect. Any IPVanish application I tested on Windows, Mac OS and Android did not find any IP address or DNS leak. Everything works fine, and data is protected with AES 256-bit encryption via the OpenVPN protocol.
IPVanish also lowers prices with a 57% discount coupon , while increasing the number of simultaneous connections allowed per account. A 7-day money back guarantee is provided for each subscription. Finally, IPVanish is one of the few VPNs in the world that has every server in its network, improving performance and security.
What are the main disadvantages?
The main disadvantage of IPVanish is that it is located in the United States, and the United States is not the best privacy (due to large-scale surveillance). However, due to IPVanish’s zero-log strategy, US jurisdictions may not be concerned about most users. After all, no logs = no data.
- Excellent speed and reliability
- A large number of applications for different devices
- Excellent privacy features, encryption and leak protection settings
- 24/7 chat and email support + phone support (headquartered in the US)
- Allow 10 connections
- Fully own server network, including secure DNS (no third party)
- Headquartered in the US (but no logs)

IPVanish speed test results
On its website, IPVanish claims to offer “best VPN speed” through its “top-level” server network around the world.
I have been using/testing IPVanish myself since 2015 and it has been one of the fastest VPNs I have ever used. What is the difference between the 2019 and the latest round of testing?
To find out, I tested a large number of servers across the IPVanish network. My baseline (non-VPN) connection speed is about 100 Mbps connection, and my physical test location is Germany. Let us check the results now.
Nearby IPVanish speed test
The first is the IPVanish server near Frankfurt , Germany : 95 Mbps
This is indeed a good test result, almost reaching my baseline speed. It’s still quite good so far!
Next up is the nearby Amsterdam server (Netherlands). Again, the speed is amazingly over 95 Mbps :
These are amazing test results so far. The latency of each server is very good, and the download and upload speeds are close to the full baseline.
For the final test, I tried a server in the UK (London), which is farther away from my location, but still relatively close. The speed is fast again, over 91 Mbps:
These are amazing results. I tested other servers across Europe and the results were excellent. IPVanish provides consistently fast speeds on all nearby servers I tested, almost maximizing my baseline connection speed. impressive!
Remote testing with IPVanish servers in the US and Canada
For the second round of IPVanish performance testing, I chose servers in the US and Canada. Again, the results are impressive.
The first test was a server in New York: 85 Mbps
Given the distance between me and the New York server, I didn’t expect the results to be so good.
Next is an IPVanish server Dallas, farther away, but still has a very high speed considering the distance: 73 Mbps
Finally, I also tested some servers in Canada and the results were very good. Here is the speed of my IPVanish server in Toronto:
These are the best VPN speed test results I have ever seen, without any speed or connection stability issues. In general, IPVanish does provide “best VPN speed” for their networks, as they claim on the website.
If you value the performance of your VPN, based on these results, IPVanish will be a reliable choice. The speed is not only fast, but also consistent.
This makes IPVanish a good choice for those who need a fast VPN for hosting or who want VPN for Kodi streaming.
Ok, now before we get into the security/privacy test results, let’s start by introducing some basics about IPVanish, including cost, application and subscription details.
What is the price of IPVanish?
At regular prices, you get the cheapest IPVanish annual plan for $6.49 a month. Fortunately, IPVanish currently offers a good 57% discount coupon , which can save you a lot of standard prices.
When you use an IPVanish coupon, the price drops to the price you see below:
Note : This coupon is only available for the first billing cycle . Therefore, the biggest savings will come from the annual plan.
Payment Method – IPVanish accepts most major payment methods, including all major credit cards and PayPal.
Unfortunately, IPVanish does not currently support any cryptocurrency payment options, although they have been there in the past. When I asked the customer service representative about the matter, he explained that the change was due to large fluctuations in bitcoin prices and high transaction costs, but they might be added again in the future.
I also maintain an IPVanish coupon page to track the latest offers and promotions. In addition to using the coupons above, you can also check to see if there are any temporary sales that will be posted directly on their homepage. (I only see that they offer several temporary sales each year, such as Black Friday or Cyber Security Day.)
Refund Policy – IPVanish offers a 7-day trouble-free money back guarantee , which they clearly state on the website:
If your satisfaction with the IPVanish VPN service is less than 100%, we will be happy to refund you as long as you request a refund within one week from the date of purchase.
This is very clear, I have not seen any problems or worrying details.
IPVanish offers a wide range of application options for many devices and platforms.
For this IPVanish review, I tested their app on Windows, Mac OS and Android.
IPVanish Windows application – The IPVanish Windows application performs very well in testing. It is user friendly, stable and never freezes or crashes.
The IPVanish Mac OS – IPVanish Mac OS application also performed well in the test. This is an updated and improved version of the IPVanish Mac OS application I tested in the past, and these applications are a bit wrong. I have not noticed any errors or connection issues with the new Mac OS application.
IPVanish Android – The IPVanish Android app performs well in testing without reporting any issues. It has a good design and is stable in testing.
We will review the application carefully in the privacy/security tests below.
IPVanish now allows 10 simultaneous connections per subscription. The previous policy allowed five, but in 2018 they doubled the number. This is much higher than the average of the VPN industry (for example, see ExpressVPN , which has only 3 connections per subscription).
Privacy and security test results
IPVanish uses the OpenVPN protocol and AES 256-bit encryption. This is the gold standard for VPN and is currently considered unbreakable.
IPVanish performed well in all privacy and security tests for this review. I tested IPVanish’s IP address leaks (IPv4 and IPv6) and DNS leaks.
Before running these tests, I verified that the following privacy/security settings are valid:
- IPv6 Leakage Protection (IPVanish provides you with an IPv4 address while blocking IPv6 and ensuring that your real IPv6 address does not leak out of the tunnel.)
- DNS leak protection (all DNS requests are handled by the IPVanish server, which by default activates DNS leak protection.)
- Kill the switch (if the VPN connection is broken, killing the switch will block all traffic to keep your data and identity secure.)
Now we will enter the test results.
Windows application : This is a test using a Windows application with a London, UK server. Everything has no problems.
Mac OS application : The following is a test result of a Mac OS application using the IPVanish server in Amsterdam: no leaks, everything works fine.
Everything is checked through the leak test: no problem needs to be reported.
IPVanish’s privacy and security will:
- Protect you from IP address leaks (IPv4 and IPv6)
- Protect you from DNS leaks
- If your VPN connection is lost, protect your traffic and data (terminate the switch)
As you can see in the results above, IPVanish passed all privacy and security tests and found no leaks.
A unique advantage of using IPVanish is the ability to access large server networks around the world.
IPVanish has one of the largest server networks in the VPN industry, and as we have seen through the above tests, it provides users with the best performance.
What is the use of a large server network?
- More servers usually mean faster speeds because each user has more bandwidth available.
- This can also help you choose a specific server that meets your needs, whether you are looking for a nearby server in your area or another location to access the media.
- It also gives you more options to geo-spoof your location, which can be useful when buying a ticket.
Top-level networks – Another benefit of IPVanish is that they own and manage the entire server network . In other words, everything is completely under their control. This is what they mean when they call their business the “world’s only top-tier” VPN provider.
Having the entire server network infrastructure offers two distinct benefits:
- Outstanding in terms of speed and reliability
- Excellent data security (no third-party rental server required)
Does IPVanish use a virtual server location?
“Virtual server location” refers to the time when an advertisement does not actually exist for a server at a specific location. For example, I found that PureVPN has many servers that are not actually in an ad location, and they have not disclosed this to users.
You can use the ping test to identify the virtual server location to triangulate the exact location. Using IPVanish, I tested a lot of different servers and they checked them out. IPVanish does not seem to use any virtual server locations.
IPVanish and logs
IPVanish is a zero-log VPN service as they are explained on their website. But before we get into their exact logging strategy, we will first check the logging cases that occurred a few years ago.
In 2016, when IPVanish was owned and operated by another company, they worked with the FBI to handle criminal cases. In this specific case, after the FBI made two separate requests during the investigation, they provided the connection data to the authorities. While this is worrying from a privacy standpoint, especially since IPVanish has a no-log strategy, it is also important when the company is in different ownership and management.
IPVanish is now owned by StackPath, Inc., located in Dallas, Texas (USA). This recorded case occurred when IPVanish was owned/operated by HighWinds Network Group in 2016. After recording the case, the time to sell to StackPath is February 2017.
I asked IPVanish to clarify this and they provided me with the following statement:
The case started in 2016 – long before StackPath acquired IPVanish in 2017. IPVanish will not, and will not, log or store our users as StackPath. We can’t talk about what others have seen, and the management team has long since ceased to exist. In addition to not logging, StackPath will also protect the privacy of users, regardless of who else is.
In addition, I also talked to the IPVanish staff about the case, and they further ensure that StackPath will not and will not have such cooperation.
What is the current logging policy for IPVanish?
As they explain on their website:
IPVanish is a zero-log VPN service provider, which means we do not record any connection, traffic or activity data related to our services.
The only information collected during registration is the email address (for account purposes) and payment information for renewals, refunds, etc.
For a direct comparison, see the ExpressVPN and IPVanish guide.
IPVanish provides excellent customer support, which I tested and verified in this review. If you need help, IPVanish offers:
- 24/7 chat support
- 24/7 email support
- Phone support (view their website for hours; based on the US Central Time Zone)
Out of curiosity, I tried phone support because I have never seen a VPN to provide phone support. It went well – I quickly got in touch with someone named Blake, somewhere in the US, not the overseas call center in the Philippines. Black is very helpful.
I also tried chat support and everything worked as expected. I quickly contacted some people who answered my general questions:
My app doesn’t have any technical issues or issues, so my support interaction is limited to general issues.
The IPVanish website also contains some excellent guides and information articles on various topics. These can all be accessed from the knowledge base and member areas.
You should be able to set everything using the guidelines in the member area. But if you have any questions, then you can try chat support or just send an email.
I also downloaded and tested the IPVanish Android app for this review.
Overall, it performs well, there are no problems to report. Here are some screenshots I took, the Android application on the left, the leak test results in the middle (no leaks!), the basic speed test on the right (slower speed) It was because my network was slower at the time, not VPN).
Overall, the IPVanish Android app seems to be working fine. Connecting and switching servers is easy, I have not found any leaks or problem reports.
If you want to use VPN on your mobile device (Android or iOS), IPVanish will be a good choice.
If you want to use VPN on your router, IPVanish is also a good choice. This will protect (encrypt) the entire home network and all devices connected to the router. Also, when you use IPVanish on a router, it will only be treated as a device. But since IPVanish gives you 10 simultaneous connections, this may not be a problem.
VPN routers are a smart idea because most Internet providers are now monitoring and recording your online activities. This is the official policy of the United States, the United Kingdom and now Australia (see Australia’s best VPN service).
Want to use IPVanish on your router? Check out the IPVanish router options here.
Is IPVanish used with Netflix?
No. IPVanish cannot be consistent with Netflix.
Unfortunately, all the IPVanish servers I tried seem to have been blocked by Netflix. However, there are occasional reports that the server passes.
The support staff I talked to also confirmed the difficulty of IPVanish accessing Netflix. When you try, you will receive an annoying Netflix proxy error message.
You can also read some of the other options in the VPN Netflix guide, which has recently been updated and improved for Netflix’s best (and worst) VPN.
IPVanish review conclusion
As you can see in all the test results, even if IPVanish does not meet the criteria listed in the Best VPN Report, it does a good job of this review. For those looking for the best performance in terms of speed and reliability, it’s still an excellent VPN, while also providing excellent encryption and security.
Value: IPVanish value?
As mentioned at the outset , IPVanish pricing is very reasonable when you use 57% of the coupons . But answering this question directly, IPVanish does provide reliable value when you think about it:
- IPVanish delivers exceptional speed across the entire server network (better than most other VPNs I tested)
- You can get 10 connections at the same time (industry average is 5)
- The IPVanish app is secure, stable and user friendly
- Get 24/7 live chat and email support and phone support during normal business hours
Although IPVanish is located in the United States, it is a zero-log VPN service with a strong commitment to user privacy under the new leadership of StackPath. If you think it might suit your needs, all plans offer a 7-day money back guarantee, and if you can’t meet your needs, you’ll get risk-free protection.
